High Potential and Gifted Education

High Potential and Gifted Education at Carlingford High School

Carlingford High School aims to meet the needs and aspirations of high potential and gifted students from all backgrounds.

To support the Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Policy, Carlingford High School has implemented the following mechanisms:

  • Offer a safe learning environment that supports the social-emotional development and wellbeing of high potential and gifted students and enables them to connect, succeed and thrive
  • Offer an academically selected HPG class in Year 7
  • Local students in Year 6 who have been accepted into the school with a confirmed enrolment can elect to sit for a test to be considered for the HPG class in October the year before commencement
  • Academically selected HPG classes continue to run in Years 8-10, with opportunities for students to be promoted into the class based on academic results
  • Support and build the capacity of teachers to differentiate the curriculum based on evidence-informed procedures, programs and practices. This is done via quality differentiated programs and professional learning opportunities both internal, and using external training such as the Mini Certificate of Gifted Education (Mini CoGE)
  • Implementing best practice teaching and learning strategies in all classes to cater to the needs of students through appropriate curriculum modifications
  • Identified students are invited to start accelerated Mathematics in Year 9, completing their Mathematics Advanced HSC in Year 11
